Detroit, Mich. — The members have voted to ratify a new four-year collective bargaining agreement with Ford by a 51.4% majority. The results of the voting are as follows:

*Production Workers: 51.3% in favor

*Skilled Trades: 52.4% in favor

UAW President Dennis Williams stated: “Our UAW members have ratified the national agreement after a long process and much debate. The voice of the majority has secured a strong future that will provide job security and economic stability for themselves and their families.”

“There is no higher authority than the membership. Through a fair and democratic process UAW-Ford members have delivered job security and strong economic gains for their families and communities,” said UAW Ford Vice President Jimmy Settles.

Additionally, the UAW-Ford National Agreement for salaried workers passed with 91.5% in favor.

Detroit, Mich. — Today the UAW-GM Council and the International Union, UAW’s International Executive Board (IEB) met to discuss the ratification results for the tentative National Agreement recently negotiated with General Motors LLC. As previously noted, while the majority of the entire UAW-GM membership voted in favor of the tentative agreement – 55.4 percent in favor versus 44.6 percent against – the skilled trades membership voted against ratification. Following receipt of these ratification results, meetings were held with the UAW skilled trades membership at each GM worksite in order to determine the issues for their rejection of the tentative agreement. CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The UAW today released the following statements reacting to the decision by the National Labor Relations board to order a representation election for skilled trades employees at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga facility despite the company’s efforts to block the election.

Gary Casteel, UAW secretary-treasurer and director of the union’s Transnational Department: “It’s unfortunate that, in the middle of Volkswagen’s widening emissions scandal, we had to spend weeks debating workers’ rights that clearly are protected under federal law. Volkswagen’s attempt to sidestep U.S. law was a waste of employees’ time and energy, and a waste of government resources. Looking ahead, our hope is that the company now will recommit to the values that made Volkswagen a great brand — environmental sustainability and true co-determination between management and employees. We have no doubt that Volkswagen can make a comeback in the U.S. and around the world, but the company needs to refocus on its core principles.”

Mike Cantrell, president, UAW Local 42: “We’re pleased that the NLRB upheld our members’ rights. We’re asking the company to respect the decision and not attempt to further interfere with the election for our skilled trades colleagues. As a union, our goal always has been — and still is — moving toward collective bargaining for the the purpose of reaching a multi-year contract between Volkswagen and employees in Chattanooga. There are multiple paths to collective bargaining, and this is a step in the right direction. We hope the company will support the same rights for employees in Chattanooga that are enjoyed by our Volkswagen co-workers around the world.”

UAW members at Deere & Co. ratify new agreement

Detroit – UAW President Dennis Williams and UAW Vice President Norwood Jewell released the following joint statement announcing the passage of Deere & Company’s contract ratification.

“A new labor agreement has been ratified by UAW members at Deere & Company. The new agreement provides many improvements for UAW members which include compensation and working conditions for nearly 10,000 members while giving Deere & Company the necessary tools to grow its business.

“The UAW applauds the bargaining committee and union members for their resolve and patience during the negotiation process.”

Statement of UAW President Dennis Williams on the 2015 UAW FCA US tentative agreement ratification vote

DETROIT – The International Union, UAW announced today that UAW members at FCA US have voted down the tentative agreement by 65 percent.

The following statement is from UAW President Dennis Williams:

“As I said at the press conference: “What I love about our organization most of all is that no matter what we do, what action we take, the ultimate decision and the power of the union is our members and they make the final decision.”

That is the design of our constitution and who we are.

We will gather the issues together; notify FCA that further discussions are needed.

We don’t consider this a setback; we consider the membership vote a part of the process we respect.

We will be meeting with the UAW-FCA National bargaining committee and council to discuss the issues.”

UAW Region 2-B has a long-standing and proud tradition of awarding scholarships each year to (11) eleven high school seniors from participating Local UAW families in Indiana and Ohio. The affiliated Local Union Presidents voted this year to raise the scholarships to twelve (12) 10,000 scholarships beginning in 2016.

The program was established to honor the memory of former Region 2-B Director and International Vice-President, Richard T. Gosser. Initially, in 1962, a single, $2000 scholarship was awarded. A foundation was established, and through contributions, the award dollar amount and number of recipients grew over the years.

As a means to keep the foundation strong and the scholarships growing even larger, Retired Regional Director, Lloyd Mahaffey, in 2004, established the first annual Richard T. Gosser Golf Outing. Local Unions, units and employers from around the state of Ohio and Indiana field teams. All proceeds go directly to the foundation and (12) twelve, $10,000 Scholarships are awarded each year.

Including the 2014-2015 winners, 308 students have received Gosser scholarships.

Region 2-B UAW Retirees also award (6) six $1000 scholarship awards to the finalists, investing in the future of an additional 107 students. In 2016, the Region 2-B Retirees are raising the (6) six scholarships to $1500.

In all the Gosser awards and the Retiree awards total over $2 million in scholarships awarded over the last 52 years.

The Scholarship Program is open to any Region 2-B Local Union, simply by making a one-time contribution of sixty (0.60) cents per member into the fund. The Local Union must have been a participating member prior to the application deadline before Scholarship applications will be accepted from their Local Union.

Parents can obtain the application forms for their graduating senior from their Local Union President or Chairperson. The application deadline each year is October 15. This is a firm date and there is never an exception made.

Awards are made based on ACT scores, class rank, extra-curricular activites, letters of recommendation, personality traits and leadership abilities. Applications are assessed by a seven member team of prominent community leaders and educators, who then select the winners.

Gosser Scholarship Program is now accepting applications from the daughters and sons of UAW Region 2B Affiliated Local members who will graduate from high school in 2016.  These prestigious $10,000 awards are based on ACT scores, class rank, extra-curricular activites, letters of recommendation, personality traits and leadership abilities.   The ACT test is required. On the morning of April 17, 2014, workers at Piston Automotive in Toledo went on strike to gain union recognition.  A majority of workers support the UAW, but until now management refused to recognize the union. Today, as a result of the courqage and solidarity of these workers, and all the other UAW members who supported them, Piston management agreed to card check recognition of the UAW.     Read more >>>

Over the past few months, people from all over the country have been talking about how their lives have been touched by health care reform.
Today, we'd like to share one of the stories that moved us.

So-called right to work laws are wrong for working and middle class families.  These laws make paying union dues optional - even though unions are required by law to represent all workers under their agreements.  In other words, the laws give people the right to shirk - since all the benefits of a union contract still cover everyone, regardless if they pay dues or not.  As a result, unions will have trouble representing members and negotiating contracts because bargaining power will be lost.

The effort to pass a right to shirk law is currently under way in Ohio.  Recently these laws were passed in Indiana and Michigan.  In Ohio, the same people who wanted to take away our collective bargaing rights with Senate Bill 5 are behind the right to shirk.  It's crucial that we educate ourselves and our co-workers, families, neighbors and friends about the truth behind this deceitful effort.   When was the last time billionaires spent millions of dollars to give more rights and freedom in the workplace?
