On March 24, 1974, over 3,000 determined labor union women and supportive feminists from across the United States convened in Chicago to create the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW). Taking planes, trains and automobiles, the women gathered to outline a plan of action that would amplify their voices in the male-dominated labor movement of the time.

Statement from UAW President Dennis Williams on the nomination of Merrick Garland to the U.S. Supreme Court

Today, President Obama nominated Merrick Garland to fill the seat on the U.S. Supreme Court left empty by the recent passing of Judge Antonin Scalia. Garland is a distinguished, moderate judge with more federal judicial experience than any other Supreme Court nominee in history. The Senate GOP leadership is refusing to give Judge Garland a full hearing and vote. We call on the GOP leadership to set politics aside and fulfill their constitutional duty to provide a hearing and vote for the president’s nominee. Our American judicial system deserves nothing less.

Citing major health and safety violations and retaliation including firings of workers, dozens of protestors began a protest action at Ground Effects, an automotive supplier in Dearborn.

Last week 10 OSHA complaints were filed including lack of adequate ventilation; repeated skin contact with the toxic uncured isocyanates, respiratory problems from robotic spray booths, lack of adequate hand and foot protections and problems with the alarm systems.

The protest began today at 3 a.m.

February is Black History Month, and we’re taking a look back on the contributions of African-American leaders within the UAW like Ruben Burks.

Ruben Burks’ long history of unionism and advocacy for social justice started in 1955 when he began working as an assembler at the former General Motors Fisher Body Plant 2 in Flint where he joined UAW Local 598. He steadily rose through the ranks of the local, serving in various leadership posts, including shop committeeperson and executive board member. In 1970, then-UAW President Walter Reuther appointedBurks to be an International representative in Region 1C. By 1989, he was the director of Region 1C and held that position for three terms.

North Carolina — Citing their records of supporting working families, the North Carolina/South Carolina UAW Community Action Program announced today that it is endorsing Roy Cooper for North Carolina governor and Deborah Ross for the U. S. Senate.

“These are two exceptional candidates who do not shy away from tough issues and are willing to stand up and make a difference for our families, community and the state,” said UAW Region 8 Director Ray Curry, a Tar Heel native.

Unions and the Fight for Civil Rights

The following article appeared in the Detroit Free Press and was written by UAW Vice President and Director of the National Ford Department, Jimmy Settles.

As we celebrate Black History Month, it is important to remember the historical importance of organized labor to black workers and their families, and unionism’s continued relevance today.

It was once legal to discriminate against minorities in hiring and wage equity. Even when it became illegal to discriminate against minorities in the workplace, bias against minorities was widely practiced and tolerated. Unions were at the forefront of the battle fighting for equal wages and an equal chance at jobs that could elevate families out of poverty.

Historically, African-Americans were given the least desirable jobs – if they were permitted to work at all alongside whites – and the auto industry was no exception. With the advent of the UAW, job opportunities and wages improved.

The UAW was formed to fight for, and ensure, workers’ rights. Fairness and justice is the epicenter of our value system and it extends to the community as a whole.

Jack Edwards would eventually be called Walter Reuther’s “point man for civil rights.” The road to that designation was filled with dedication to civil rights and the UAW for many years.

Lordstown autoworkers show off the new Chevy Cruze

LORDSTOWN, Ohio – Some of the 5,000 men and women who make the Chevy Cruze in Lordstown are showing off the result of their efforts on the assembly line.

GM Investing nearly $150 million in Spring Hill Plant

General Motors will invest nearly $150 million in its Spring Hill manufacturing plant.

The investment will repurpose machinery and assembly equipment to allow the plant to build V8 engines, retaining about 200 jobs, according to a news release.

The upgrade will mark the first time the Spring Hill facility will be equipped to build V8 engines, and will allow the plant to quickly add capacity to build the small-block, 6.2L engines for its trucks and SUVs, including the Chevrolet Silverado Crew Cab, GMC Sierra Crew Cab, Yukon Denali, Yukon XL Denali and the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV

“Spring Hill and its employees have a reputation for producing award-winning 4-cylinder engines,” UAW Local 1853 Chairman Mike Herron said in the release. “We appreciate GM recognizing these outstanding skills with the opportunity to build V8 engines for some of GM’s most popular full-size trucks and SUVs.”

On the 7th anniversary of President Obama signing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, here are some statistics we should all be concerned about and take notice of:

Under Indiana Governor Mike Pence's leadership and the "Right to Work is Wrong" (RTWIW) legislation jammed through the Indiana State Legislature by members of his party, Hoosiers make $.86 for every American dollar, dropping Indiana to 39th in per capita income. And according to a study by the American Association of University Women, Hoosier women make $.73 cents for every dollar men make working comparable jobs, ranking Indiana 46th in the nation and below the national average of 77 cents. (We can take great pride that our Collective Bargaining Agreements require equal pay in Union represented work sites, another reason why RTWIW.)

UAW Region 2-B has a long-standing and proud tradition of awarding scholarships each year to (11) eleven high school seniors from participating Local UAW families in Indiana and Ohio. The affiliated Local Union Presidents voted this year to raise the scholarships to twelve (12) 10,000 scholarships beginning in 2016.

The program was established to honor the memory of former Region 2-B Director and International Vice-President, Richard T. Gosser. Initially, in 1962, a single, $2000 scholarship was awarded. A foundation was established, and through contributions, the award dollar amount and number of recipients grew over the years.

As a means to keep the foundation strong and the scholarships growing even larger, Retired Regional Director, Lloyd Mahaffey, in 2004, established the first annual Richard T. Gosser Golf Outing. Local Unions, units and employers from around the state of Ohio and Indiana field teams. All proceeds go directly to the foundation and (12) twelve, $10,000 Scholarships are awarded each year.

Including the 2014-2015 winners, 308 students have received Gosser scholarships.

Region 2-B UAW Retirees also award (6) six $1000 scholarship awards to the finalists, investing in the future of an additional 107 students. In 2016, the Region 2-B Retirees are raising the (6) six scholarships to $1500.

In all the Gosser awards and the Retiree awards total over $2 million in scholarships awarded over the last 52 years.

The Scholarship Program is open to any Region 2-B Local Union, simply by making a one-time contribution of sixty (0.60) cents per member into the fund. The Local Union must have been a participating member prior to the application deadline before Scholarship applications will be accepted from their Local Union.

Parents can obtain the application forms for their graduating senior from their Local Union President or Chairperson. The application deadline each year is October 15. This is a firm date and there is never an exception made.

Awards are made based on ACT scores, class rank, extra-curricular activites, letters of recommendation, personality traits and leadership abilities. Applications are assessed by a seven member team of prominent community leaders and educators, who then select the winners.

On the morning of April 17, 2014, workers at Piston Automotive in Toledo went on strike to gain union recognition.  A majority of workers support the UAW, but until now management refused to recognize the union. Today, as a result of the courqage and solidarity of these workers, and all the other UAW members who supported them, Piston management agreed to card check recognition of the UAW.     Read more >>>


Over the past few months, people from all over the country have been talking about how their lives have been touched by health care reform.
Today, we'd like to share one of the stories that moved us.

Renee is a mother of three young children who was blindsided by cancer. She was rejected from her husband's health insurance, and several other private plans, because of a pre-existing condition -- leaving her stuck with a plan that had a yearly limit and additional stress that the care she needed might not be covered.

So-called right to work laws are wrong for working and middle class families.  These laws make paying union dues optional - even though unions are required by law to represent all workers under their agreements.  In other words, the laws give people the right to shirk - since all the benefits of a union contract still cover everyone, regardless if they pay dues or not.  As a result, unions will have trouble representing members and negotiating contracts because bargaining power will be lost.

The effort to pass a right to shirk law is currently under way in Ohio.  Recently these laws were passed in Indiana and Michigan.  In Ohio, the same people who wanted to take away our collective bargaing rights with Senate Bill 5 are behind the right to shirk.  It's crucial that we educate ourselves and our co-workers, families, neighbors and friends about the truth behind this deceitful effort.   When was the last time billionaires spent millions of dollars to give more rights and freedom in the workplace?
